Thanksgiving at NASA and in space

We’re all getting ready for Thanksgiving, and while this holiday, as with all holidays, look different for each of us, I hope all of us are able to take some time to think about the many things we’re thankful for (I know I am!).  Today we received the following message from Charles Bolden, the current administrator of NASA.  Attached to his message is a video from the International Space Station crew, who will be having Thanksgiving zooming around our planet at 17,500 miles per hour, conducting experiments, and eating space food.  Here’s what our administrator wrote to us, and here’s a message from our astronauts:

Thanksgiving Message

I want to extend my best wishes for a happy Thanksgiving to the entire NASA family.

It’s a uniquely American tradition to gather as a nation and give thanks for our personal and collective blessings. This year NASA has much for which to be thankful — from the successful conclusion of our Space Shuttle Program to the many discoveries of our science missions and the ongoing spirit of innovation that energizes the entire agency.

Our mission is vital to our nation and to the world, and I am thankful for each and every one of you, who dedicate your passion, expertise, and hard work to keeping America the leader in space exploration.  I know that working at NASA is a personal calling to many of you, and I thank you all for this successful year.  As an agency, we take care of each other even as we improve life around the world.  I ask at this holiday season that you consider what you can do to improve your own communities and carry that NASA energy home.

While you gather with family and loved ones, I hope you will share the great excitement we all feel about a future that is bright with the promise of new exploration. Join me and my family and give thanks for the blessings we have been given and the chance we have to reach new heights so what we do and learn can benefit all of humankind.

Once again, our brave astronauts will celebrate the holiday in space aboard the International Space Station.  Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as well.  Below is a link to their holiday message to you.

Have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday!

Charlie B.
